Evergreen Women's Care Practice History
HISTORY OF THE EVERGREEN WOMEN’S
CARE
After a gynecological infectious disease fellowship at the University of Washington,
Dr. Pheifer began his practice in the Kirkland
area. He was joined by Dr. Pat Heffron in 1979.
He and Dr. Heffron lead a 16-physician group that formed the first certified
freestanding surgical center in the State of Washington. That surgical center
has recently been expanded into the new Evergreen Surgical Center on the top
floor of the new Evergreen Surgical and Physician Center. This center is a
state of the art facility for minimally
invasive surgery (MIS).
EVERGREEN WOMEN’S CARE was formed when Dr. Charles Heffron joined Drs. Pheifer and Pat Heffron in practice in 1981. The two Dr. Heffrons had been stationed together in the US Air Force. They are not related, but have parallel pathways in medicine including both had fathers who were family physicians and both had mothers who were named Catherine.
In 1981, Dr. Charles Heffron and several colleagues and nurses began to explore the concept of Family-Centered Care. That exploration lead the Family Maternity Center that opened in 1986 and has grown into a nationally recognized program for Birth. This collaborative process was internationally recognized in 1996, when the World Health Organization named Evergreen’s FMC the first Baby Friendly hospital in the United States. This group of physicians supported Dr. Susan Rutherford, the first perinatologist (high risk Ob specialist) in a Puget Sound community hospital environment. That practice, Eastside Maternal Fetal Medicine, now has five members and supports both Eastside hospitals. Recently, Dr. Pat Heffron worked part time in program development at Evergreen Healthcare for two years with the perinatologists and neonatologists at Evergreen Healthcare, forming a partnership with the University of Washington, department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and with Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center (CHRMC), to form a single-room model of care for sick newborns, who need more intensive care, but also need the love and support of their parents during this healing time.
In 1990, Dr. Pat Heffron was President of the Washington State Obstetrics Asssociation, an educational organization for obstetrical providers through out the state, that works to improve the outcomes for birth. This organization is made up of obstetricians, family physicians delivering babies and certified nurse midwives who work with their respective physicians. Dr. Charles Heffron was president of the organization in 1994. They both continue to serve on that organization’s board. Dr. Pat Heffron has been a member of the Medical Staff Council at Evergreen Healthcare for the past four years. This group of responsible physicians actively interacts with the medical staff, the senior administration and the Board of the medical center to address the challenging times of our current healthcare system and promote greater collegiality, cooperation, partnership, and understanding in a true relationship. Dr. Terry Pheifer has served in the role of Practitianer Credentials for Evergreen Healthcare and currently is chairman of that program. Dr. Deb Stemmerman joined them in practice in 1997. She currently serves on the Women and Children’s Advisory Board. Dr. Shaunie Keys joined the EWC group of physicians in 1998. Dr. Dawn Russel is the newest member of the group, coming to the practice in the summer of 2000. Drs. Heffron are no longer delivering babies and are just practicing gynecology.
Mary Schubert, ARNP, (women’s healthcare specialist) joined the practice in 1984. She has been supported by her physician colleagues here while also fulfilling a unique service to women undergoing bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Patricia A. Payne, ARNP has been practicing as a nurse practitioner for over 20 years, and spent the last 5-1/2 years providing primary care to people aged 12 and up in a Kirkland internal medicine clinic. She joined the practice in 2005.
